You might even have been the recipient of it. Kitty picks out a likely spot, and begins working those paws like she's stomping grapes with Lucy and Ethel. Sometimes it's just soft pawing, sometimes the claws spring into action, but while she's into it, she's totally focused on the job at hand, er... paw.

Cats just seem to have a deep seated need to knead, and they are not particularly concerned whether they are kneading their own comfy cat bed, your couch cushions, or better yet, your lap.

The question seems to be not so much whether they enjoy this activity, but what inspires them to do it. Let's examine two of the strongest reasons.

Emotional Security
One reason why cats knead paws stems from their kittenhood. Kittens must nurse their mother to get life-sustaining milk. Kneading mom, stimulates the let-down response, causing the milk to flow more freely. The movements are instinctive, and since they incur a reward, kitty naturally transfers the behavior to other places and things in the hope of more good things to come.

Territorial Marking
While kitty generally kneads its paws to make sure its chosen spot is as comfy as possible, there is another reason for this behavior.

Cats have scent glands located in the pads of their feet near the base of their claws, and each feline produces its own unique scent. While humans don't generally notice this scent, other cats and animals can, so the scent serves as a marker to show where your cat has been.

When kitty wants to mark out the boundaries of its territory, it will paw and perhaps even run its claws across the item, leaving those signature scratches and a bit of personal eau de feline in the bargain.

I read this on the internet and it touch me today.
While at work this afternoon, my doctor ask me to get a cute Torti cat out of her cage and prep her for an ultrasound. Her name was Tabitha. Right away I could tell she was in much discomfort. I am always one to take special care of all the cats, but especially Torti's, because I have one at home. Well, the Ultrasound revealed cancerous growths in her stomach and liver, and really all through her abdomen. The call was made to her owner and the decision was made to put her to sleep. It was the right decision since she couldn't eat anymore. We gave her some pain medication, and waited for the owner to come down to the hospital to say her goodbyes.

While waiting, I decided to just talk to the kitty and pet her myself. For 10 minutes, I pet her and found her favorite spot, along the bridge of her nose, and around her eyes. She also favored her chin. Minutes went by and slowly she started purring. Then I saw her toes start moving. For several minutes this kitty was lost in the time of her kittenhood, purring and kneading. Within the hour her owner had come and said her goodbyes. 17 year old Domestic Tortoise hair cat, named Tabitha.Alicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00275016984248496867noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-738122392326692139.post-33646534067164679712009-07-16T19:39:00.000-07:002009-07-16T20:08:53.827-07:00We're hearing a lot today about big splashy memorial services.

I want a nationwide memorial service for Darrell "Shifty" Powers.

Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Infantry. If you've seen Band of Brothers on HBO or the History Channel, you know Shifty. His character appears in all 10 episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them.

I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn't know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having trouble reading his ticket. I offered to help, assured him that he was at the right gate, and noticed the "Screaming Eagle", the symbol of the 101st Airborne, on his hat.

Making conversation, I asked him if he'd been in the 101st Airborne or if his son was serving. He said quietly that he had been in the 101st. I thanked him for his service, then asked him when he served, and how many jumps he made.

Quietly and humbly, he said "Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so, and was in until sometime in 1945 . . . " at which point my heart skipped.

At that point, again, very humbly, he said "I made the 5 training jumps at Toccoa, and then jumped into Normandy . . . . do you know where Normandy is?" At this point my heart stopped.

I told him yes, I know exactly where Normandy was, and I know what D-Day was. At that point he said "I also made a second jump into Holland, into Arnhem." I was standing with a genuine war hero . . . . and then I realized that it was June, just after the anniversary of D-Day.

I asked Shifty if he was on his way back from France, and he said "Yes. And it's real sad because these days so few of the guys are left, and those that are, lots of them can't make the trip." My heart was in my throat and I didn't know what to say.

I helped Shifty get onto the plane and then realized he was back in Coach, while I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to get him and said that I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came forward, I got up out of the seat and told him I wanted him to have it, that I'd take his in coach.

He said "No, son, you enjoy that seat. Just knowing that there are still some who remember what we did and still care is enough to make an old man very happy." His eyes were filling up as he said it. And mine are brimming up now as I write this.

Shifty died on June 17 after fighting cancer.

There was no parade.

No big event in Staples Center.

No wall to wall back to back 24x7 news coverage.

No weeping fans on television.

And that's not right.

Let's give Shifty his own Memorial Service, online, in our own quiet way. Please forward this email to everyone you know. Especially to the veterans.

Rest in peace, Shifty.

"A nation without heroes is nothing."
Roberto Clemente

Bro Cochrane from Texas sent me this in an e-mail and I wanted to share it with you. My grandfather served in WWII, he was in Italy on D-Day, I believe. When ever I read things about WWII, I think of my grandfather and how humble WWII veterans always seem to be. Just like "Shifty" Powers my grandfather was quiet and humble when talking about war in general, and I never remember him talking about any of the conflicts he was personally in. He was a Japenese american and joined the Army shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. (He lived in Hawaii at the time.) One of the most famous battles he was in, was the famous rescue of the "Lost Battalion" at Biffontaine, France. The 442nd suffered the loss of nearly half of its roster—over 800 casualties, including 121 dead—while rescuing 211 members of the 36th Infantry Division's 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry, which had been surrounded by German forces in the Vosges mountains since October 24. My grandfather was one of those survivers. I know he watched a lot of his friends die, and that may be one reason he never talked about the war. I couldn't imagine the things he saw.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 146px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicMKwvK-avxGrUB4SoGPJvpXrdJMASqAytN2A_FOrvG7tYF_OaXbBoE9m7J2z18thlAkVE9rYLd4AhiBpFdBKT2eyx_nt1BohI-VyTTIZpJAnl7AzTWGHl41OJih0BXcvvmHbHovwss6Gj/s400/442+nd+reg+team.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359260142883769746" />

When I remember my grandfather I wish I would have heard some of these stories first hand but I never thought of asking these things, lets never forget the veterans that are still with us today, the young and the old.

Alton Eiichi Nakama (1921 - 1992)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 154px; height: 155px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIlgukSaMpKnKudMDxLpCoOnCfDdMAdZYgyASjVFnhOVv528cp0DYMk08YWyHizGr-m_iYSj0KclM5tKBE06eqzX1tVis7ZjBevsilYiYiTsYDfEHL3v_7gHbdDQwuffHDOaDh-QPwJ16T/s400/go+for+broke.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359260132201989906" />

GO FOR BROKE! No the Easter bunny didn't come to our house today but someone was auditioning for a substitute bunny. I had to explain to him he's not an herbivore, he's a carnivore. Big difference. He still thought that the basket Madison bought to put her school project in was the next best thing to sliced bread. We had an awesome time. One of the last services we went to, this story was told, I thought I would retell it today...just something that has stuck with me.

A gentlemen was given a tour of an asylum for the criminally insane. After walking through the tour, he questioned the warden, "Why are there not more guards, guarding the prisoners? If they ever got together, it wouldn't be good." The warden replied "That would never happen, lunatics never unite"

The preacher then said, We as apostolics need to band together, get together, DON'T BE A LUNATIC!

I don't want to be a lunatic off by myself and unable to band together with my fellow apostolic, unable to witness, and grow. Thank God for Godly fellowship.Alicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00275016984248496867noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-738122392326692139.post-38426497661847673822008-07-24T16:59:00.000-07:002008-12-08T21:30:11.714-08:00NEW BLOG<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_U-vAKQ6UEVhoDmuSEVM598VWw3VeY_NjuPXS0JnfNHv3N7Xd_L7UThft41DYjdRDmwbAc0BR6RIj5czEu4wyfXzBBMu0X-zIfMfGg05InFzpqZTn0x_19I9q-gYp_zSYHA0XFX_8iOYW/s400/cat+food.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226737102703883906" />
Check out my new blog...
http://chowhoundalice.blogspot.com/

People are always asking me for my recipes...Death by Chocolate...Alice's chicken salad...Olive gardens Toscana soup...Marie calenders Potato cheese soup...Christmas sugar cookies with frosting, etc, etc,...

I hope to slowly list my favorite recipes on this blog, I hope I have time to update it frequently enough, if you have any suggestions on what you would like to have posted next let me know!

Happy eating!Alicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00275016984248496867noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-738122392326692139.post-79167472420157116962008-07-21T17:12:00.000-07:002008-12-08T21:30:11.888-08:00Radio classics<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVbdcCNtPnN5Tm8Di5FH-H3PH73ICF36ypLOzY7jr-Rc5nybdKQ0Y4Uz_q1mio0mnZE0ddfnf9QQ-SJFCpHjfJGRbHbcRXjfKtaEbwAJZAOPiLUOPOi5XlklUdEYnG6ikiqw3CDFxp85tn/s400/jack+benny+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5225626385660826114" />

The radio/TV comedian Jack Benny was quoted in a magazine, I got a little laugh and I thought I would share it. I was in the second grade, or maybe even the first grade. I walked to school with my aunt who was in the fifth grade. We went to the same Elementary school for a couple of years. She is the youngest of my mother's siblings, my mother being the oldest of 6 children, my aunt and I are just 4 years apart in age.

We were walking to school and my mother came driving up in our car. She should have been at work a long time before this. She yelled at us, "Your not going to school today, get in the car! We are going to the beach!" This had never happened before and I don't ever really remember it happening after this. Some things you never forgot no matter how young you are.

I played "Hooky" this day. Along with my parents and aunt, there came along, my 2 uncles, and one of my uncles girlfriends who is know also my aunt.

I never forgot this day. It was so memorable because after just arriving at the beach, I stepped out into the sand and immediately stepped on a piece of glass. My uncle Micheal, then carried me all over the beach for the rest of the day. With a bloody bandage on my foot. I remember a sea lion, the tide pools and shells. I never forgot this day.

Just yesterday I told my mom about this memory. The cut on my foot, the sea lion we got so close to, and getting out of school that day. She told me that it was all my Dads idea. I never knew that, since she picked up up on our way to school. I always thought it was her idea. It wasn't. My parents have been divorced since 1980, the year my youngest brother was born. I don't get to see my real dad very often, and I have a wonderful Step dad, that I love very much. But I am glad that my dad had the idea of getting out of work and school that day. We all made memories that can never be taken away from us. I thank God for our fathers. Neither she nor Kevin have ever been on a ship, or boat. Our adventure started at 1:30pm. We got to the dock at Dana Point Harbor today at 12:30pm. We had a hard time finding parking today. We ended up parking very far away. About 20 minute walk. Once we got there, we checked in, and the boat was almost ready to go. When we finally boarded, we were filled with excitement and nervousness. Once we got out of the harbor, we started to open it up... it was very choppy... very windy today. It was like being on a roller coaster. It's funny how time flies. We were out for 3 1/2hours. It seemed like 30 minutes. We had the times of our lives. The kids loved the choppy water and no one on our boat got sick. There was about 25 people. We even felt good enough after seeing the whale, that we ever ate snacks, before coming back in. This was a great birthday for Maddy, abut a wonderful day for us all.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO6Amg0b71pVsGVH39ltCS4xSYcMeaM0t9mfn7Hyru5vOzOUbI06xJk8Jv55MlBTuBZt2hd2vUjRaydKpX19NYuMcWBeU2u91nB2kGJEJh1eIwBEUOFDGCBCuAp3h1dyPZW5IDI-v-Nq2h/s400/Whale+watching+001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5211968962406051906" />

Kevin and Maddy before their first whale watching adventure.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiQLNCSyrwKBUWVxZlsSwoWrVFrcwSlcqO5QuQm5GFtGGQncKon3wfo7FEVZJ5Z8KPkBdotGGDwPBIjh12v5la-dnGu8TjRFCHmG80WrEioCoG695joNsH9Toky0pqZnpZ9nVGvI8ljP90/s400/whale+watching+060.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5211968971058177538" />

This Blue whale was 20 feet away from our boat. Everywhere we turn there are more and more creatures that find are way to our family. Last Thursday I took in a Kitten and another Chinchilla. I found a home for the Chinchilla, right away with a co-woker. The kitten found a home with another co-worker within 24 hours. The very next day Joe found the spider at work. On Tuesday Kevin found a Lizard at school and brought it home. What will next week bring? ...LOL

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxoSqbpNhkXwrAxTwO3p3MZvFURaFnD9AiqrYUx9veH77MQ9GsyjrZ2QLT8yVc0T5X8EM9g_cxUQn6PSLTm4Q1C_L4yRkwnFgCXnMgic9007ImI0zh_yq2xDOYifqIPjeUL1IRigp3X2gp/s400/Kevin's+6-08+004.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210864455853634466" />

Enjoying a mid-afternoon snack...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAyCgX8bldmu0irHx5ynLwEnr2rP22kwc_xAwCubLN_uiolRqEpkgT6KcCXVMAj-w2-Pz2V3_lfXr1xMTRKb9m0fOIVcIAKDsJUb1buwWfjspCB9mqE4VZvpEeerDpoUKjnBTlUjrBLFFG/s400/Kevin's+6-08+022.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210864466480687074" />

I ate my first cricket Tuesday...
Sceloporus occidentalis
Western Fence Lizard

PHRYSONOMATIDAE

Sceloporus from the Greek skelos, meaning leg and porus, meaning pores in reference to their femoral pores located along the underside of the leg. Before this he had eaten a fly we caught. He much preferred the crickets I think. In this picture the cricket is almost the same size as the spider. The first time I saw him eat I wasn't prepared for the amazing show it was going to put on. He stalked the cricket like a cat stalking it's prey. Keeping the one he wanted in front of him at all times. When it finally came into reach he would jump at it with lightning quickness, bite and jump back. Then as the cricket became paralyzed it would take it into it's mouth and climb or walk around with it. The spider did this with all 3 of the crickets we gave him back to back, within 12 hours he had eaten 3 crickets. This was on Sunday, so on Tuesday we gave him another 3 crickets, and Tomorrow he will go to his new home. I can't say that I will be sad seeing him go. I know I will sleep much better knowing he is elsewhere. I did really well the first several days of after his arrival, but the longer he's here the more creeped out I am becoming. I think it has something to do with seeing him eat. I am sure there will be more spiders, as long as I have a friend, whose son marvels at them, there will always be a place for them to go, and we will always pass them along.Alicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00275016984248496867noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-738122392326692139.post-66110849488709057302008-06-06T17:27:00.000-07:002008-12-08T21:30:14.492-08:00New SpiderI know I haven't blogged recently... I have a lot I have been thinking about blogging but this couldn't wait. I have a new spider.

Phidippus audax, or jumping spider. I have a good pic of this one. I think it is a male. I read a discription of this spider and the males have green eye brows. This one does, but you can't see it well in the pic I got. They are common throughout the United States and Canada.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNtwwwJTVvQ0cwqPGsAp6RFUTXr1SFiY3LSKTLEo-F2fsnYvLxRQWmZCuTxGwLfE9IYADr70jHV5l9XCzE3S3955W8rKtpMDXvTlVRDhEAu5eCBhUhmz20N-aJ3CCOgKpqpDeb2zeJSox2/s400/spider+2+002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208932591738061938" />

They are very hard to catch since they "Jump" and are not posionous. Their bite can sometimes be irritating however. They do jump on their prey.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf-Nk93EmIx5EmtUnlEpNbNm32U1uiPbVPvkZQcUlOGeB3yzKlZFUNkmGmyrAM1dcHcVGGDRPRhVL61zR2gJ6f8bwRebmls4Y2-ajtFy_JfXUM3gOBDz2KT7NQo4d-BHHxVquAFlCH75Tq/s400/spider+2+004.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208932632981688338" />

Ofcourse, I will be forwarding this spider to my friend. Well it should, because Pastor preached this passage of scripture on Sunday night. The funny thing is, I taught on this same scripture sunday morning in Sunday school. We had a lot of teaching going on the sundays leading up to Easter, I didn't get a chance to teach this lesson before Easter and since it was prepared I figured I would go ahead and teach it. "The triumphant entry" I have been using the "Search for truth" Bible study chart for my teaching and the kids love it. They especially liked the chart with a map of Jerusalem, and Jesus' last days and were they took place on the map.

I understand that God will confirm his word for many different reasons. Sometimes it's so we'll just have faith that he is real and that these things are not a coincidence. Sometimes it's so He can show Himself, or increase our faith. I know one thing, my students are paying attention because when this passage was read on Sunday night they looked at me with bewilderment in there eye, and if I could read their minds they were saying, "Hey, that's the scripture from this morning!" If it can touch one child and bring this scripture to their minds sometime in the future, then this seed was sown on fertile ground. On TV, in movies, in print publications and online, men and women of faith are told they're inadequate in the workplace or at home, as spouses or as parents.

And our children are even bigger targets. TV, films and video games offer gratuitous violence, teen programs with provocative clothing and situations, pop-ups on the Web ... they're all fighting against the virtues and values you hold most dear and strive to instill in your kids." Focus on the Family

I read this today in an e-mail and it was thought provoking. Secular religion understands the the ploys of the devil to win your children over to the ways of the world. This message is true, but how much more discernment we have as "Holy Ghost filled Apostolic Christians." We need to be parents first and friends to our children second, or we do them a great injustice.

"When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things."
